Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay Per Click Advertising Basics

Pay Per Click Advertising (Usually abbreviated PPC) allows advertisers to display ads for their goods or services whenever someone types a related query into a search engine. PPC ads are most prevalent on Google and Bing, but they can also be found on Facebook or Twitter. You’ll often see PPC ads above organic listings on the major search engines.

In the most basic of terms advertisers buy ads based on keywords (video game, washing machine, kitchen appliance, etc.) or search terms (large red kitchen mixer, outdoor green gas grill, etc.) that match their products or services. When someone clicks on their ad the advertiser is charged a given amount of money for the click. The person doing the search then arrives on a web page on the advertiser’s website that matches those keywords or search terms.

So, if an advertiser bids $1.50 maximum on the keyword “large red kitchen mixer”, and that’s the highest bid, they’ll probably show up first in the paid ads. The search engines do have other criteria but as a general rule the highest bids will show up in the 1st or 2nd position.

Google Adwords and Bing Ads are the two leading PPC providers. Facebook and Twitter offer their own versions of PPC and those sites can be a great way to attract social media users. PPC ads can generate instant targeted traffic to websites along with leads and sales.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising is Not for Every Business

While the prospect of increased leads and sales can be very attractive to business owners there are a few things that should be kept in mind before launching a Pay-Per-Click Advertising Campaign.

  1. Competition for popular keywords and search terms can be fierce and it can be easy to get caught up in a bidding war for the 1st or 2nd ad position
  2. The expense of PPC ads can quickly overrun advertising budgets and profit margins
  3. PPC ads and campaigns need to be monitored closely to realize the most potential

PPC advertising for most businesses is not financially smart or feasible unless closely watched. However, there are certain situations that running a PPC campaign can bring benefits to even small businesses.

  1. Products or services that can be purchased on a landing page for a PPC ad
  2. Niche products or services
  3. New businesses that want to reach online customers quickly and easily

Social Media Pay-Per-Click Advertising

Social Media PPC can be a great way to draw attention to your products and services. Social Media attracts a wide demographic of people with varied interests, hobbies and lifestyles. This type of advertising works differently than traditional PPC. Ads are displayed based on user interests, topics they comment on, their geographic location and other variables.

Typically ads are displayed in the user’s timeline or feeds and depending on the social media site may appear on a sidebar. The most popular sites for Social Media PPC are Facebook and Twitter. Other popular sites for this type of advertising are Instagram, LinkedIn and Snapchat.

Much like conventional PPC advertising budgets can be set and ads targeted to certain users. Analysis of ads and analytics are also used to measure the success of a Social Media PPC campaign.
